Research has shown that there are links between bullying and suicide, and because of those links the CDC now considers bullying a public health problem.
According to John Gever at MedPage Today,”Due to its strong association with suicide, bullying has gained the attention of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).”
The CDC is now advocating the need to intervene where bullying is concerned. But they do not believe that the “traditional” approach is enough any longer, and that:
Stakeholders in education and health should consider broadening their focus beyond just providing services to those who are already involved in bullying or suicide-related behaviors, but also in implementing strategies to prevent bullying and suicidal behavior from occurring in the first place.
The agency, which convened an expert panel, published a special issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health that is devoted exclusively to bullying that was published in mid-June. This special issue has 10 articles addressing the different aspects of both bullying and suicide.
